Development of a Driverless Electric Shuttle Bus for Future Local Public Transport

The Challenge

The number of mega cities around the globe is growing rapidly, and urbanization looks set to continue increasing in the future. This results in a growing need for mobility within cities which can only be met by new transport concepts, because local public transport passengers' calls for on-demand products are on the rise. However, bus operators will have difficulty in meeting this demand if they are to operate profitably.

The Solution

An autonomously driving electric shuttle developed by IAV for public roads as well as its further development are currently being implemented in the sponsored HEAT project ('Hamburg Electric Autonomous Transportation'). Following the construction and testing under 'laboratory conditions' of a prototype in the OTS pilot project, two further prototypes are now set to be developed and tested under real conditions in public road traffic in the context of the project. To enable safe movement in urban traffic, IAV is working on an overall system solution together with Siemens, Hamburger Hochbahn, and other consortium partners. consulting4drive ensured the progress of the project thanks to professional project management and occasionally acted as the single point of contact at the interfaces to the consortium partners.

The Result

In the final expansion phase in 2021, Hamburger Hochbahn AG will operate the driverless shuttles in normal, everyday road traffic in HafenCity. As a flagship project for automated passenger transport, HEAT will also be one of the highlights at the world congress for intelligent transport systems (ITS World Congress) in 2021.
